The Cambridge-Stratford Study Skills Course for Middle School
20 Hour edition (6-8th) by Dr. Mary Elizabeth Paterra

Teaching "good" study habits before students learn "bad" ones is the cornerstone of the 20 Hour Course. It uses a 7.2 readability to engage students in using practice exercises common to middle school cognition. Students discover new ways of handling regular class assignments with greater speed and understanding. Success is a built-in ingredient in each chapter as examples move from easy to more difficult. A pre and post test survey is available that documents the gains of students as they master the techniques presented. A pre and post test Parents' Observation survey is also available for engaging parents in the evaluation process. (click Pre/Post Assessments for more information.)

STUDENT WORKBOOK

The STUDENT WORKBOOK has been prepared to help reinforce the lessons being taught. It includes practice examples that students complete to give meaning and relevance to the skills presented. Ample space is provided on each page for note taking to allow each student to create a personally meaningful reference for on-going review in the days, months, or years following instruction. Journal entry pages conclude the end of each chapter and allow for written student reflections on the relevance of each skill to their everyday class and homework assignments.

TEACHER MANUAL

The TEACHER MANUAL provides a clear, step-by-step instructional format that emphasizes learning-by-doing by students over direct lecture by teachers. Each lesson is developed in a "scripted" format to reduce preparation time. Interaction with students using questions, a Transparency and Listening Tape Set, and practice examples in the Student Workbook allow teachers to maintain an active student-centered learning atmosphere that emphasizes self-discovery and the trial and error of learning using an active "hands-on" format. Each lesson includes 10-15 pages of instruction, requires no special training, and can usually be organized into 1-1 1/4 hours per class. Size 8 1/2" x 11", spiro bound, 108 pages, Transparency Set=36 rainbow colored, 8 1/2 x 11" , Listening Tapes= 5 emphasizing listening/outlining/notetaking

PREVIEW MANUAL

The PREVIEW MANUAL is available FREE to those wishing to review the style, format, and integration of one chapter of the Teacher Manual, Transparency Set, and Student Workbook. One edition includes both the middle school (20 Hour) and high school (30 Hour) Courses. A separate edition is available for the pre college/college level.
