Assessing the improvement of students' study skills and behaviors as a result of instruction and "hands-on" practice is an important component for validation. Each lesson integrates tools for topical evaluations to demonstrate mastery of skills improvement and, in most cases, students witness immediate increases in effectiveness with the use of the time-tested and proven learning strategies. This enhances student motivation. It also gives testimony teachers can readily discern for the effectiveness of their time-on-task.
Optional Assessments for Evaluating Change in Students' Study Behaviors
Oftentimes an overall assessment detailing how improved study skills change overall study behavior and habits is preferred and/or required. To assist with such assessments, two optional instruments are available, one for students (pre/post) and one for those desiring to include parents (pre/post) entitled:
Demonstrating Improvement in Study Habits and Behaviors Over Time
Pre-test administration of students in normally recommended before instruction begins. Post-test instruction is recommended after instruction is complete. Ideally, a 30-45 day grace period following instruction seems to prove meaningful. However, with limited time constraints evaluation at the start and end of instruction will produce measurable results. The Survey of Student Assessment of Study Behaviors is a four page topical survey that asks students to evaluate how, when, and where they study and what independent learning strategies they use to approach their work. A self-scoring Study Behaviors Profile completes the Survey. Post-test Survey results provide a second profile for each student. By comparing both Survey profiles, teachers can obtain a comparative score for each student and develop mathematical profiles for class averages. Additionally, if preferred, pre-test scores of some or all students can be integrated into private counseling and advisement to help students focus more carefully on specific parts of the instruction they will receive. A sample Pre-Test Survey is available on request. Its topical areas include:
1. Positive Attitudes 4. Good Comprehension 2. Useful Work Habits 5. High Performance Writing
3. Efficient Learning Tools
6. Effective Test Taking
Involving Parents in Assessment of Study Behaviors Proves Valuable
Parents often welcome the opportunity to become involved in the education of their children. The Parents' Observation of Study Behaviors Survey is a viable way to provide this important role. Use of the pre and post administration Surveys helps to communicate to parents the scope and sequence of the instruction being offered their children and the kinds of outcomes that may result from such instruction. It also encourages parents to support the behaviors for effective study that are the focus of the survey and instruction. The three page Survey can be mailed directly to parents, is easy-to-use and understand, and uses a self-scored Study Behaviors Profile sheet to tabulate scores to answers for each of four profiles including:
1. Positive Attitudes 3. Efficient Learning Tools
2. Useful Work Habits 4. Effective Test Taking
Post-test administration Surveys can be mailed to parents after instruction is complete. A comparison of the pre/post profile sheets provides a comparison of the changes parents have noted in the study behaviors and attitudes of their child. Pre-test results may also be used in consultation with parents to encourage their support in helping specific students to focus on and practice the instruction being offered. A sample Pre-test Survey for parents is available free on request.
